How to Get an IRS Tax Transcript for Use Abroad

How to get an IRS tax transcript online or by mail — which transcript type foreign lenders and consulates want, how many years, and why a tax-software printout won't work.

Updated September 26, 2026 · 5 min read

Quick answer

Download it free from your IRS online account, or request it by mail with Form 4506-T. Most foreign lenders and consulates want the tax return transcript for the last one to three years. A copy of your filed return or a tax-software printout isn’t a transcript and won’t be accepted.

Which transcript to request

  • Tax return transcript — line items from the return as filed. The usual choice for income verification.
  • Tax account transcript — payments and adjustments.
  • Record of account — both of the above combined.
  • Wage and income transcript — W-2 and 1099 data.

Step by step

  1. Sign in to your IRS online account

Identity verification is required the first time.

  2. Choose the transcript type and years

Match exactly what the lender or consulate asked for.

  3. Download and print

Print directly from the IRS system. Don’t edit it.

  4. No online access? Use Form 4506-T

Request by mail; allow extra time for delivery.

Timing tip

Transcripts for the most recent year only become available after the return is processed. If you just filed, check availability before promising a lender a date.

When you’ll need it abroad

  • Foreign mortgage applications
  • Long-stay and residency visas with income requirements
  • Business and investment verification abroad
  • Foreign bank account opening

Troubleshooting

Your online identity verification fails

Use Form 4506-T by mail instead.

The latest year isn't available

It appears only after the return is processed; amended returns take longer.

The lender wants a signed return

A transcript is the IRS's own record; if they insist on a signed return, ask whether a transcript satisfies them.

Your name or address doesn't match

Transcripts show IRS records; if the institution flags a mismatch, include an explanation or supporting ID.

Next: getting it apostilled

Once you have the document, it needs authentication before a foreign authority will accept it. See how to apostille it. Our price is $299 per document for Hague Convention countries and $399 for non-Hague countries including embassy legalization, with government fees included.

Frequently asked questions

Is an IRS transcript free?

Yes. The IRS doesn't charge for transcripts.

Can I use a copy of my tax return instead?

No. Foreign institutions want the IRS's own record — the transcript.

How many years do I need?

Commonly two or three consecutive years. Confirm with the lender or consulate.

Can I get a transcript for a spouse?

For joint returns, either spouse can request it; otherwise the taxpayer must authorize it.

How long does a mailed transcript take?

Allow one to two weeks or more.
